2 Arrested in Battery of Miami Police Officer

Two men accused of attacking a Miami Police officer were behind bars Friday as authorities searched for a third suspect.

Alvino Garza, 20, and Louis Codone, 23, are both charged with battery on a police officer and resisting arrest, police said. Garza is also charged with attempted murder.

Garza was being held without bond while Codone's bond was set at $10,000, jail records showed. It was unknown if they have attorneys.

According to police, the officer was on routine patrol Thursday afternoon in the area of Southwest 10th Avenue and 3rd Street when he saw Garza riding a bicycle against traffic.

The officer tried to stop Garza but he took a fighting stance then fled the scene and ran into a nearby building, officials said. When the officer tried to take Garza into custody, Garza's friends heard the commotion from an apartment.

Garza and the officer fell into the apartment during the struggle and Garza pleaded for his friends to shoot the officer, officials said. Codone started hitting the officer and the third suspect pointed a gun at the officer, officials said.

When the suspects heard sirens, they fled the area. Police put up a perimeter and placed two nearby schools on lockdown, and Garza and Codone were arrested. A handgun was also recovered at the scene.

The officer wasn't seriously hurt, officials said.
