2 Panther Kittens Found Dead in Southwest Florida

Wildlife officials say two Florida panther kittens were killed by a vehicle over the weekend in southwest Florida.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that the first kitten was found Sunday morning along Immokalee Road in Collier County, while the second was discovered across the street that night. Biologists estimate the kittens to be about four months old.

The dead cats mark the 15th and 16th road kills this year. A total of 21 panthers deaths have been recorded for 2014.

The carcasses are being sent to an FWC facility in Gainesville for necropsy.

Florida panthers once roamed the entire southeastern U.S., but only around 160 remain in the wild.
