2 in Custody After Shooting, Carjacking Near Galleria Mall

Two suspects are in custody following a shooting and carjacking near the Galleria Mall, Fort Lauderdale Police said.

The incident happened early Friday at Sunrise Boulevard and Northeast 24th Street in Fort Lauderdale.

Police said the driver of a blue Ford Explorer was approached by the two suspects, who forced their way into the vehicle.

During the incident the suspects produced a gun and shot the victim and made off with the victim's car.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old Romaine Wilson, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition.

Both suspects fled in the vehicle but got out in the 2300 block of Northeast 9th Street. Officers responded and set up a perimeter, and both suspects were caught with the help of a K-9 unit, officials said.

Police identified the suspects as 24-year-old Abimael J. Rodriguez-Aponte and 25-year-old Daniel D. Cabrera. Both were charged with robbery-carjacking, aggravated battery and kidnapping-false-imprisonment. It was unknown if they have attorneys.
