Karlie Tomica, 20, the woman charged with DUI manslaughter in a South Beach chef s death, wants to be able to leave house arrest to go to church, her attorney Mark Shapiro said Tuesday. He and Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Migna Sanchez-Llorens spoke about the matter in court.

Towing truck company owner and operator David Chirinos was servicing a car in the emergency lane of State Road 874 by the Killian Parkway exit early Saturday when an older model BMW fatally hit and pinned him between the two cars, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The BMW then sped away, the FHP said. On Monday brother Edwin Chirinos spoke for the victim s distraught family as it demands justice. Neighbor Tony Moreno was devastated by the news of David Chirinos death, while neighbor Elu Socccaras recalled his giving spirit.

A young boy was hospitalized after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Fort Lauderdale Tuesday night, police said.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. when the 3-year-old boy left the sidewalk in front of his home in the area of Northeast 53rd Street and Northeast 18th Avenue and ran into on-coming traffic, Fort Lauderdale Police spokeswoman Det. Deanna Greenlaw said.

Witnesses said a red Volkswagen struck the boy and fled the scene, police said. The boy was rushed to a hospital where he was in stable condition, Greenlaw said.

The car has a possible Florida license plate of 316TXC. Anyone with information is asked to call the Fort Lauderdale Police Department at 954-828-5460.
