300 Miami-Dade Workers Get Pink Slips

County employees laid off Monday and more expected by end of the week

Pink slips were handed out to 300 Miami-Dade County employees Monday and more employees could be out of a job by the end of the week, the Miami Herald reported.

The layoffs come just days after county commissioners approved a $6.1 billion budget that will close a $400 million gap.

Those losing their jobs include workers from libraries, jails and water and sewer departments, and could rise to 350 total by the end of the week and higher if the county can't reach contracts with its 10 labor unions.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez said agreements need to be in place by Nov. 1 to avoid more pink slips.

"Every day that passes [without a contract], the more layoffs will be incurred," Greg Blackman, president of the Government Supervisors Association of Florida OPEIU Local 100, told the Herald. "We had layoffs today and we expect many more to be coming in November and December."

The budget, passed Sept. 23, will cut more than 1,100 positions, some 500 of which are already vacant. Commissioners also got rid of a controversial tax rate hike that passed last year, and approved Gimenez's plan to reduce the numbers of county departments from 42 to 25.
