4-Year Sentence for Fort Lauderdale Man in Diet Pill Scam

Federal prosecutors say a Florida man has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for illegally selling diet pills that were mislabeled as "all natural" diet supplements.

A news release from U.S. Attorney Walt Green in Baton Rouge says 52-year-old John Wesley Hoag of Fort Lauderdale pleaded guilty last year. The pills he distributed as "all natural" actually contained sibutramine. That prescription weight loss drug was pulled from the market in 2010 because of stroke and heart attack risks.

Hoag's 50-month sentence was handed down Thursday.

Green said Hoag's case was related to that of 54-year-old Darlene Krueger of Destrehan, who was convicted in March for distributing sibutramine. Krueger is awaiting sentencing.
