A 47-year-old Miami woman has given birth to triplets without using fertility treatments.

Sharon Lewis wasn't trying to become pregnant and thought it was impossible at her age when she was told she'd be giving birth to three baby boys. Lewis already has a 25-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son.

"It was nobody but God that blessed my womb at 47," she said.

Lewis said she found out she was pregnant with triplets at a prenatal visit to her doctor. "She said, 'Twin A, twin B, and looks like I see something else,'" the new mom told reporters. "Now the tears rolled, because it was unexpected."

Lewis developed preeclampsia, high blood pressure and protein in the urine, and Dr. Salih Yasin, from University of Miami-Jackson, decided to deliver the triplets early.

The boys were delivered on March 18 at just 30 weeks, each weighing about two pounds. Since then, they've been cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit at Holtz Children’s Hospital but are finally heading home Tuesday.

Doctors said having triplets, at her age, without fertility treatments is almost unheard of.

"This occurs like 1 in somewhere between 6,000 and 500,000, so it's not something that is common," Dr. Yasin said.

The new mother of five said she feels like the kids will give her everything she needs as far as energy.

"They're going to keep me young and vibrant," Lewis said.
