5 Children Reported Missing from Children's Home Society in Miami Found Safe

Five siblings, ranging in age from 5 to 16, who were reported missing from the Children's Home Society were found Friday, Miami-Dade Police said.

The children, who range in age from 5 to 16, had been in the custody of CHS, located at 10720 Caribbean Boulevard in Miami, and were set to be processed for shelter placement when police say the children walked out of the building without the case manager's knowledge.

Police said the children were found on Northwest 6th Avenue in Florida City.

Officials said the children had been in the care of their grandmother since November 2014 but there had recently been a domestic incident at the home and the Department of Children and Families intervened.

At a court hearing Thursday, a judge ruled that the kids would be removed temporarily from the grandmother's home and would be placed in a temporary shelter.

As the kids were being processed earlier Friday they asked to go to the bathroom. After about five minutes, the case worker went to check on them and they had left, police said.

Grandmother Carolyn Laguer said the 16-year-old girl took her siblings with her.

"What was her main concern? She didn't want to be in foster care, they been there before, she don't want to go again and she didn't want to be separated from her sisters and brothers," Laguer said.

The family is due back in court on Monday.
