Five people were taken to Ryder Trauma Center after a head-on collision on the 79th Street Causeway Thursday, authorities said.

A two-door Mercedes convertible was heading east on the causeway in the rain when the male driver lost control of the vehicle, jumped the median and struck a pickup truck head-on, Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll said.

A grandmother, her daughter and two teenagers were in the pickup, he said.

A nurse stopped to provide aid before paramedics arrived on the scene, Carroll said.

The five patients were taken to Ryder, but it was unclear what their conditions were Thursday night.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
