Authorities released 911 calls Wednesday in the case of a man who was bitten, most likely by a shark, in the waters off South Beach over the weekend.
The man was swimming in waist-deep water when he suddenly felt pain below his knee.
"There's a guy who was in the water. He's bleeding a lot, a lot and they don't know what happened and they're trying ..." a 911 caller said.
"Okay where is he right now?" the operator responded.
Another person calling for help reported “a shark bite around the leg of a person."
The victim, who was treated at Ryder Trauma Center and didn’t want to be identified, did not see a shark. But Dr. Howard Lieberman, who treated him, said Tuesday that his wounds were consistent with shark bites.
Before the victim was taken into the operating room and given blood transfusions, beachgoers did more than just call for help, the third 911 call revealed.

When an operator asked if the man was out of the water, the caller responded, “Yeah, they just took him out."
"And he's bleeding from where?" the operator asked.
"I can't tell,” the woman replied. “There's a lot of people around. He's laying down. They gave him their shirts."
When the operator asked if somebody was applying pressure, the woman said they were.
