A South Florida daughter is thankful her mother's ring was found in the rubble of the 9/11 attacks.
The haunting images of 9/11 are difficult to escape for South Floridian Sonia Tita Puopolo. Her mother, Sonia Morales Puopolo, was killed on board American Airlines flight 11, the first hijacked plane to hit the Twin Towers.
"It was devastating," said Puopolo. "My mom was blown to bits and left us, and I was blown to bits and I was here."
Rife with pain and despair, Puopolo was left with only memories of her mother, until eleven months after one of the most horrific days in American history. That's when, at Ground Zero, up from the darkness, came a glimmer of light she would cherish forever.
"It was an absolute miracle," said Tita.
Rescue workers recovered her mother's left hand and on it, her wedding ring of 40 years.
"I feel it was something that was sent back from my mother," said Puopolo, whose heartbreak had turned into joy.
Compelled to share her message of hope with the world, Puopolo wrote a book, called "Sonia's Ring: 11 Ways to Heal Your Heart."
"My book can provide inspiration and words of comfort that I wish I had while going through 9/11, " said Puopolo. "I put my soul and prayers and my heart into it with so much love."
Through the pages are inspiration and words of comfort, along with a daughter's prayer for strength. It's been quite the journey for Puopolo, one she plans on traveling with courage, love and forgiveness. Along with a simple yet powerful message that we're never alone.
Puopolo and her family plan to host their annual candlelight vigil at Boston Commons for the 9/11 anniversary.
