A1A in Fort Lauderdale gets New Look From Beach Erosion

Crews work to alter small stretch of road near ocean

A four block strip of A1A along Fort Lauderdale Beach has a new look Friday after crews spent the night re-painting and downsizing the road.

Weeks of beach erosion from Northeast 14th Avenue to 18th Avenue forced crews from the Florida Department of Transportation to make A1A just two lanes now, instead of four.  Crews also re-marked a six-foot path for pedestrians and bicycles.

Fort Lauderdale Beach Erosion Raises Tourism Concerns

Motorists can only park on the west side of the road along the sidewalk. The east side is now partly blocked off as the city and state continue trying to fix the damage that breaking waves, high winds and high tides have caused on A1A.  They have temporarily piled concrete wall barriers along the shoreline to stop any more sand and water from spilling over.

A permanent fix will take longer and cost millions. City spokesman Matt Little says a newly-formed task force will come up with a long term plan to renourish the 100 yards of damaged beach. A public meeting is planned for December 10.
