Adopted Son Indicted on Murder Charges for Mom's Death

Gerard Lopes is accused of killing the woman who adopted him

A South Florida man was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder charges after he was accused of killing the woman who adopted him, prosecutors announced.

Gerard Lopes, 21, allegedly killed Natalie Belmonte, loaded her body in a car and then dumped it in a wooded area in Pembroke Pines near the woman's home, police said.

Surveillance cameras caught a man who resembles Lopes loading what appeared to be Belmonte's body into a car, police said.

Lopes told detectives that he had been partying all night July 16 and came home the next morning and passed out. He said his mom was missing.

Lopes is currently being held in Broward County jail on no bond.
