Alleged Nightclub Shooters Face Stiffer Charges

Two teenagers arrested for allegedly shooting up a Miami nightclub in September appeared in bond court Wednesday for the first time since being charged as adults.

Seventeen-year-old Will Campbell and 16-year-old Jamiroquai Young were arrested for the shooting at The Spot nightclub in Miami in September. In court Wednesday, Campbell and Young were informed they are now facing different charges.

“You’re being charged with attempted first-degree murder, a direct file,” Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat said.

The judge was interrupted by a prosecutor who said, “It’s actually 15 counts of attempted first-degree murder. The aggravated battery counts are now first-degree murder on the new filed charges.”

Campbell and Young were originally charged as juveniles when they were arrested. Campbell’s initial charges were one count of attempted first-degree murder and 14 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. Young originally was charged with accessory after the fact of attempted first-degree murder and 14 counts of accessory after the fact of aggravated battery.

The shootings, according to Miami Police, stemmed from a fight at Norland Senior High School. Police said one of Campbell’s friends got into a fight and when he and his friends arrived at The Spot, they found out the other person involved in the fight was there. Police said Campbell shot at the person and then sprayed the crowd with bullets as well.

In court Wednesday, defense attorney Kathy Hamilton argued that the juvenile court judge found no probable cause to “charge Young as a principle” in the crime. Judge Rodriguez-Chomat disagreed.

“Number one, he is no longer in juvenile court,” Rodriguez-Chomat said. “That’s a very different court. And number two, these charges are very serious, very serious charges. There’s no way that I will release him on house arrest, absolutely none.”

Both Young and Campbell remain in jail Wednesday with no bond. Both will be back in court Monday for their arraignments.
