Amelia Earhart Relative Retraces Flight to Miami

Amelia Rose Earhart wants to complete an around the world flight by 2016.

A woman who says she is a distant relative of Amelia Earhart will arrive in Miami Friday, returning to the city that her famous family member began her second attempt to fly around the globe.

Amelia Rose Earhart told NBC Miami she will be flying the plane from Austin to Miami. The flight is retracing one of the many routes Amelia Earhart took in 1937.

"This is my first really big adventure," Amelia Rose told NBC Miami.

By 2016, Amelia Rose hopes to continue the legacy and complete Earhart's 1937 around- the-world flight. The route, however, will not be exactly the same because she will be flying a smaller plane. The Cirrus single-engine craft is equipped with a parachute so that in case of emergency, the entire plane can land safely.

Amelia Rose is currently in instrument training, an advanced level course that will certify her to fly through clouds and areas with no visibility.

"I get the chance to speak to many groups of people. I want to get people excited about flying and this is a great way to see the country," Amelia Rose said.

The pilot is a reporter for an NBC affiliate KUSA in Denver, where she will announce her newest flight goal tomorrow. She is currently studying meteorology at Mississippi State University.

Earhart was the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. She disappeared over the Pacific Ocean and Howland Island during her second attempt to circle the globe.
