Anchors away!

Hundreds of sailors are descending on South Florida for Navy Week, a 7-day-long celebration meant to deepen ties with the military branch.

The USS New York, a warship measuring 684 feet from bow to stern, is docked at Port Miami. The vessel is built with steel salvaged from the World Trade Center after September 11th.

"I ask each of you to reflect on the selfless dedication it takes for our men and our women in uniform to protect us," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

The U.S. Navy traces its origins to 1775, and the celebratory week aims to give residents an idea of just how vital the Navy is to the country, according to the website.

And the top brass says, if you spot these visitors in white – don’t be shy.

"When you see someone in uniform, stop and talk to them, ask them what they do, where they served, listen to their stories, ask them why they joined the navy. That's what today is all about," Admiral Craig Faller of US Southern Command said.

Seven-and-a-half tons of melted steel is in the bow of the USS New York, which is headed to Jacksonville next.
