Couple Rushed to Hospital After Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Miami-Dade couple poisoned in home, rushed to hospital

A South Florida couple was rushed to a hospital for treatment early Monday after apparently suffering carbon monoxide poisoning.

The couple was found unconscious by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue members inside their northeast Miami-Dade home just before midnight.

The couple’s son arrived at the home on Northeast 191st St. only to find his parents lying on the floor unconscious. He immediately pulled them out of the house and called 911. HAZMAT crews showed up and discovered high levels of carbon monoxide inside. Authorities say the couple didn’t have a detector.

"One of the things you can do to prevent this is to have a carbon monoxide detector in the home. It will detect the presence of carbon monoxide," said Captain Eric Baum of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. "Again it's a colorless odorless gas that can cause you to go unconscious before you can detect the presence of gas. Having a detector in your home like a smoke detector in your home can give you that initial notification that there is a problem."

The couple was initially taken to Aventura Hospital and then rushed to Mercy’s hyperbaric chamber.
