Authorities have identified the man fatally shot by deputies in West Palm Beach Friday.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said 18-year-old Christopher Thompson died after opening fire at a Palm Beach County Credit Union parking lot.

According to investigators, deputies responded to a 911 call at about 4 p.m. regarding an armed man firing a weapon in the air in the parking lot of the bank, at 3469 Summit Blvd.

When deputies arrived, authorities say Thompson shot at a patrol car, striking it three times. Deputies returned fire, striking and killing Thompson, of 3961 Park Lane in West Palm Beach, the sheriff’s office said.

The deputies involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave.

Authorities said a backpack found inside a gold sedan with its engine running in the parking lot did not have anything harmful inside.
