Ax-Wielding Man Fatally Shot in Downtown St. Petersburg: Police

He carried a fireman's ax with a long, yellow handle and a red blade, the Tampa Bay Times reported

St. Petersburg Police said officers shot and killed a man who threatened them with an ax.

A police statement said officers responded to a call Monday evening of an armed man threatening people with an ax. Two officers arrived on the scene in downtown St. Petersburg and approached the unidentified man.

Police spokesman Mike Puetz said the man charged at one officer while holding the ax and the officer fired several shots at about 6:45 p.m., the Tampa Bay Times reported.

"The first thing the officer saw was a group coming around the corner, in a panic," Puetz said. "Then a guy with an ax."

It was a fireman's ax with a long, yellow handle and a red blade, according to the newspaper.

Paramedics responded and the suspect was pronounced dead on the scene, with his body covered on the sidewalk on Fourth Street between Central Avenue and First Avenue N, the Times reported.
