BSO Deputy, Prisoner, Hospitalized After Crash

A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy and the prisoner they were transporting were hospitalized after an early morning crash on Friday.

At around 3:35 a.m., BSO officials said a black Dodge Charger carrying four people ran a red light and slammed into the deputy's marked vehicle at the intersection of South Andrews Avenue and Southeast Second Street in Fort Lauderdale.

The deputy, Steven Serphos, was in the process of transporting a prisoner, 34-year-old Yoed Rivera-Hernandez. Both were taken to Broward Health Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

A third car stopped at the intersection was also impacted by the crash. The driver and passenger of that car were both treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The four people in the Charger, including driver Bryan Espinosa, were also taken to Broward Health for non-life threatening injuries.

The intersection was closed while officials investigate. Motorists were advised to take alternate routes.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
