BSO Using Drones in Crime-Fighting, Firefighting Efforts

Broward County first responders are placing drones at the forefront of fighting crime and battling blazes.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office and BSO's Department of Fire have been using drones since September to fight crime, engage in SWAT operations and perform search and rescue missions.

The drones give first responders the ability to indirectly access areas that may otherwise be difficult to reach – a safer alternative for the people involved.

BSO has more than two-dozen drones in operation and the machines have already helped in catching suspects and in rescuing victims from fires.

"We now have the ability to use the eyes of a drone, a piece of machinery that's replaceable, to go around the corner to check out these threats," BSO Lt. Jeff Cirminiello said. "Again it's a good example of real-time intelligence at a very low cost, possibly saving lives."
