Patients of the Foot and Ankle Institute at Barry University are being notified that their medical records and personal information may have been hacked.
The security breach was detected around May 14 after a school laptop was found to be infected by a form of malware, the Miami Herald reported Tuesday.
Officials say the laptop was used to gain access to private computer systems. The Herald reports the university launched an investigation, hiring an outside computer forensic company.
The affected files have been restored to their original state.
The investigation revealed that some sensitive patient information may have been compromised. The number of patients affected was not made available.
"Due to the complexity of the malware infection, the university cannot conclusively determine whether the malware was able to expose any of its patients' or guarantors' personal information or whether an unauthorized person acquired the information," the school said in a news release.
The university is offering a complimentary 12-month credit monitoring service to those whose information was at risk.
