A middle-aged bicyclist was struck and killed by a Tri-Rail train while crossing the tracks at NW 62nd Street in Fort Lauderdale at about 7 a.m. Thursday morning, police said.

Fort Lauderdale Police said a northbound train had just gone through the intersection when the cyclist began heading westbound across the tracks. But as he was crossing over, in the median section of the road, a train coming the other way hit him, police said.

At the time “the traffic control arms for the railway were in the down position, preventing vehicles from crossing the tracks,” they said.

The bicyclist was taken to North Broward Medical Center and pronounced dead at about 9:30 a.m.

The bicyclist, who is in his late 50s and about 6 feet tall, has not yet been identified, Mandell said.

Police ask that anyone with information on his identity or the accident call investigator Donald Goedke at 954-828-5754.
