A Miami man died Saturday after he jumped in the water while fishing to cool off, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

An autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Luis Fernandez, 43, was on a 17-foot vessel in the area of Carysfort in the Atlantic.

He was jumped in to cool off around 5:45 p.m. His girlfriend, 46, who is also from Miami, said the current began pulling him away.

He grabbed for a fishing line that was in the water, but it broke, authorities said.

His girlfriend told authorities she tried to throw him a life preserver, but he was so far away he couldn’t reach it. The woman said she it was the first time she was on a boat and didn’t know how to operate it.

The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found the man’s body.
