Boca Raton Man Captured on Video Smothering Roommate's Wailing, Moaning Cat: Police

Jordan Bean, 25, faces a charge of animal cruelty, police said

A Boca Raton man was arrested after he was captured on camera squeezing and smothering his roommate’s wailing, moaning and hissing cat, police said.

Jordan Bean, 25, was arrested Tuesday for animal cruelty, a third-degree felony, after his attacks on a 2-year-old cat named Chompers, Boca Raton Police said in a probable cause affidavit.

His roommate Alanna Jenkins, 23, told police that she had video of Bean abusing and torturing Chompers, the affidavit said.

Jenkins told NBC 6 South Florida that she has known for a while that her roommate has been going into her room, so she bought a motion-activated camera disguised as an alarm clock at a spy store.

“So I bought that and set it up to see what was going on, and it turns out that he was going in my room every day and hunting down my cat," she said. "As soon as the camera was tripped by motion, she was already hiding from him. As soon as he walks into the room, she’s already hiding and growling."

She watched Monday’s video after getting home from work, and saw Bean hunt Chompers in her bedroom, telling police that he wrapped the cat in a towel or blanket and violently shook, choked and slammed her on the bed for 10 to 15 minutes, the affidavit said.

Police said they watched the video, which shows the cat hissing, moaning and wailing at Bean as he searches for it in the bedroom, the affidavit said. Bean attempted to catch the cat in the closet, tried to trick Chompers into coming out, and could be heard “meowing while inside the closet mocking the cat,” the affidavit said.

Indeed, Jenkins said, every time her roommate would walk by her bedroom door, he would meow at the cat.

“I just thought he was being funny, but it turns out he was taunting her," she said.

On Monday the cat escaped from the closet, but Bean eventually caught her, according to the affidavit.

“He is finally able to get his hands on Chompers and it is at this time (that) he wraps her in a towel covering her face, excessive squeezing her against his body,” the affidavit said.

The cat’s wails and moans became louder and more severe. Bean briefly left the room before he returned, jumping on the bed with Chompers and smothering her underneath him while she was still wrapped up, according to the affidavit.

He stopped and then resumed smothering her three times, the affidavit said.

“After this he sits on top of Chompers while holding her down with both his hands and smothers her again with all of his weight,” which is more than 10 times as much as the cat’s, the affidavit added.

The cat got away and hid under the bed. Bean searched for her again, holding a belt in his hand, but wasn’t able to capture her and left the room, the affidavit said.

Bean told police that he has gone into his roommate’s room on several occasions to tease the cat and chase her, the affidavit said.

After police watched the video, Bean said he would usually play with Chompers by chasing her and wrapping her in a towel, as he admitted he did on Monday, the affidavit said.

“Bean also stated to us that he decided to finally release the cat when he heard her make a sound that was different from the hissing, wailing and moaning that is heard on the video,” the affidavit added.

Bean was released from jail on $3,000 bond later on Tuesday, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office records. It was not immediately known whether he has an attorney.

Chompers was examined at Cole Animal Clinic in Boca Raton and appears to be in good health, the affidavit said.

Jenkins said Chompers was an orphaned kitten before she took her in. She had a near-death experience a year and a half ago when she was kicked by a horse and had to sit in a small crate for three months after a surgery after that, Jenkins said.

"She’s already been through a lot of traumatic stuff. But she seems to be okay," her owner said.

Jenkins added that Bean's Xbox Live screen name was "Ikildurcat."

She concluded about Chompers, "If she could speak for herself, then she would be sticking up for herself, but she can’t so I’m doing it for her."
