Boca Raton Woman, 86, Assaults Husband, 89, in Spat Over Canceled Trip to New York: Report

Edna Zent became upset after her husband told an airline she was ill: Sun Sentinel

An 89-year-old Boca Raton woman spent a night in jail for assaulting her 89-year-old husband after he told an airline that she was ill, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

Edna Zent and her husband were scheduled to fly to New York on Thursday, but her knee, which was recently operated on, was bothering her. She told him on Wednesday that she’d rather not go, and while the husband did not want to cancel the trip, he called the airline, the newspaper reported.

He explained that he needed to cancel the flight because his wife was ill – but after he hung up, his furious wife threw objects at him and struck him with her arms, according to the Sun Sentinel.

He defended himself by pushing Zent away but fell into a rocking chair and knocked it over, the paper said.

He moved into the computer room but she followed minutes later, knocking over the computer chair and pulling the phone from the wall, according to police.

The husband kept trying to get away from Zent, but she went on to swing a telephone cord at her husband, strike him in the arm with the rim of his baseball cap and throw sneakers at him, the Sun Sentinel reported.

Zent faces a charge of aggravated battery on a person age 65 or older, and was released on her own recognizance Thursday afternoon, according to online Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office records.
