Bond Denied for Teen Beating Suspect

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling couldn't help Wayne Treacy get out of jail

A Broward judge has ordered a teen accused of nearly beating a 15-year-old girl to death to remain in jail while he awaits trial.

Wayne Treacy was hoping to get bond after a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that seemed to open the door for juvenile offenders to get out of jail before trial.

But Circuit Judge David Haimes said Thursday just because juveniles can't be sentenced to life without parole doesn't mean they are entitled a bond.

On March 17, Treacy, 15, stomped on the head of Josie Lou Ratley, nearly killing the Deerfield Beach middle school student. Treacy had been upset at Ratley, whom he had never met before, because of a text message the girl may have sent about his dead brother.

Treacy is charged with first-degree attempted murder.

Ratley, now 16, is home recovering from brain damage and internal injuries. She made her first public appearance since the attack over the weekend.

A 13-year-old girl also charged in the case, Kayla Manson, had her trial date pushed back until August earlier this week.
