A rising boxer who won an Olympic silver medal has avoided jail time in connection with a wild 2018 brawl in a Miami Beach parking garage that was caught on camera.
Shakur Stevenson, 21, was sentenced to a year of probation Tuesday as part of a plea deal related to his arrest on battery charges.
"Mr. Stevenson took responsibility for what took place on the night in question," defense attorney Mark Shapiro told reporters after the hearing. "Mr. Stevenson is now moving on with the rest of his life as are the other individuals in this case and I think everything ended appropriately and as it should have."
Surveillance footage obtained by sports radio personality Andy Slater showed the June 2018 brawl in the parking garage on 20th Street that involved another boxer and left a man and woman bruised and bloodied.
Stevenson was arrested on July 1 on battery charges. The New Jersey native won a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Shapiro said Stevenson is happy to be moving on.
"Shakur Stevenson is a wonderful young man, this is a horrible indiscretion on his part, very inconsistent with his history. This is a young man who's had one goal since he's eight years old, to be a profession boxer, he's achieved that goal, silver medalist in the Olympics, he's undefeated as a professional right now," Shapiro said. "This was just a one-off, if you will. He feels horribly about it, terribly embarrassed, this is not who he is."
