Boy, 13, Injured by Fireworks in Fort Lauderdale

A 13-year-old boy remains hospitalized after undergoing surgery to reattach his hand that was severed in a fireworks incident in Fort Lauderdale Wednesday evening, officials said.

The incident happened in the 1600 block of Northwest 9th Avenue. What exactly happened is under investigation, but Minnie Pearl McNair says her grandson,  Javonte McNair, was with other kids when one of them threw fireworks at him.

"It exploded when he caught it because he said the boy threw it at him," she explained.

McNair says her grandson ran home just a few blocks away. His right hand was severed and he was bleeding profusely.

Rashad Woodard is one of several people who was around when it happened, "I saw him running with the blood," he told NBC 6.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials said McNair was taken to Broward General as a trauma alert.

Surgeons performed emergency surgery Thursday to reattach the teen's hand. His current condition is not immediately known.

Minnie says her grandson is an avid football player and fan, and that the teen cried in his hospital room when he realized the severity of his injuries.

Police have not yet determined whether any criminal charges might be filed in the case.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
