A 14-year-old boy who wore a “Scream” mask when he robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint in Pompano Beach in September has been arrested, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
The juvenile suspect from Pompano Beach was arrested Monday and charged with armed robbery in the case, the BSO said. He was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center and then the Juvenile Detention Center and remains in custody.
The teen was carrying a black handgun when he confronted 52-year-old mailman Glenn Girard in the area of 901 Northeast 12th Ave. as he was delivering mail at about 2:45 p.m. on Sept. 9, according to detectives.
The 14-year-old pointed his gun at Girard and demanded his keys, and Girard gave him the key to his postal truck, the BSO said. But the boy kept pointing the gun in the mailman's face, and Girard pushed the gun away from him before they wrestled, the BSO added.
The boy ran away, dropping both the key and the mask from the horror movie franchise, according to the BSO.
Girard, of Coral Springs, received scrapes and bruises on his knees.
The BSO and a U.S. postal inspector investigated. Following news stories on the robbery, detectives got an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip naming the 14-year-old, who later confessed his involvement to detectives, the BSO said.
The agency said the teen had 10 outstanding warrants, mosmtly for burglary and grand theft, and was on probation.
