Boyd Anderson High Substitute Teacher Accused of Sex With Student

A Broward substitute teacher is facing several charges for having sex with an underage student, and police say he admitted she wasn't his only victim.

Carlos Javier Rojas Paz, a 25-year-old substitute teacher at Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, is facing seven counts of sexual battery on a victim 12 or older and under 18 by a custodian, according to a Sunrise Police arrest report.

Rojas Paz was arrested Thursday and was being held on $700,000 bond Friday, Broward jail records showed. It was unknown if he has an attorney.

"The individual was registered as a substitute teacher for the District and, through Broward Health, served as an athletic trainer. Immediately upon notification from law enforcement regarding his arrest, the District barred him from working in our schools," Broward County Public Schools officials said in a statement. "The District continues to work with law enforcement officials regarding their investigation."

According to the report, Rojas Paz was arrested after the Broward County School Board received a tip alleging a sexual relationship between a substitute teacher and a minor.

The victim told police she was 16 when she met Rojas Paz in February 2014. From February to December 2014, the teen said their student-teacher relationship grew into a sexual relationship, the report said.

Rojas Paz and the teen met up nearly daily at the school and he would take her to his apartment in Sunrise where they would have sex, the report said. They also exchanged sexually suggestive photos of themselves through Snapchat and KIK messenger, the report said.

When officers arrested Rojas Paz he said he knew why they were at his home and admitted he knew his relationship with the girl was inappropriate but he "has been unable to control his sexual behaviors," the report said.

Rojas Paz admitted to having sex with the girl 6-7 times and and said the last encounter was in January because he was trying to end the relationship, the report said.

During his interview with police, he also advised he'd had sex with two other underage students and had exchanged sexually explicit photos with a juvenile claiming to be 14, the report said.

"We've determined that there are additional victims and we have concerns that there may be even more that have not been identified yet," said Officer Cindi McCue of the Sunrise Police Department.

Investigators are still looking into those other cases.
