A Boynton Beach community is mourning the death of a 22-year-old soldier who died while on his first tour of duty in Afghanistan, WPTV reported.

Michael Metcalf, a U.S. Army Private was killed by an improvised explosive device Sunday.

“He just wanted to join the army. You know he would have loved to have been in special forces or you know but, he didn't make it that far," Kim Metcalf, the mother of Michael Metcalf told WPTV.

She said her son was helping other troops when he was hit by the IED.

Metcalf attended Park Vista Community High School and later St. John's Northwestern Military Academy in Wisconsin. He joined the army after graduating.

Plans for his funeral have not been finalized.
