Boynton Beach Woman Cited For Leaving Dog Unattended With Car Off

A Boynton Beach police officer used his baton to break a car window and rescue a dog that had been left behind by its owner Monday.

The woman had just left the dog park and drove to the Bank of America in Sunshine Square on Woolbright Road, where she said the drive-thru was closed. Police said she went in the bank, leaving the Pit Bull behind with the car off and all of the windows up, prompting a passerby to call 911.

Police initially went store-to-store to try and find the dog’s owner but were unable to do so. Sgt. John Dunlop then used his baton to break a window and help get the dog out of the car.

Police said it was at least 110 degrees in the car at the time.

It took between 10 and 15 minutes from the time the call was placed for the dog’s owner to arrive, police said. The dog was returned to its owner after the woman learned about the law and was given a citation.

"It is never OK to leave your pet in an unattended vehicle,” Boynton Beach police wrote in a Facebook post. "It is illegal and if you do it in the City of Boynton Beach, you are going to be cited for it – at a minimum."
