Miami Police said Tuesday afternoon they expect the Brickell Avenue Bridge to remain closed for the next few days while emergency repairs are made.
Traffic had to be rerouted from the southbound lanes of the downtown bridge Tuesday after it became stuck thanks to a damaged locking mechanism, Florida Department of Transportation officials said.
The locking mechanism became damaged during an early morning test operation, FDOT officials said.
The northbound lanes stayed open and southbound traffic was being rerouted to SE 4th Street.
But police said later in the day that they have established detours around the bridge.
Drivers heading north who want to remain on U.S. 1 will detour west on SE 7th Street to South Miami Avenue and then north onto the Miami Avenue Bridge, police said. After crossing the bridge, drivers should remain in the right lane to NE 1st Avenue and go north to SE 3rd Street, where they will make a right turn and reach U.S. 1.
Drivers heading south will make a right turn on SE 2nd Street, then go west to South Miami Avenue to SE 8th Street. Once there, they can make a left turn and reach Brickell Avenue.
The FDOT is working around the clock to make the repairs, police said.
