A Brink's truck guard was robbed at gunpoint before he fired at the robbers in front of a bank in Sunrise Thursday, according to newly released surveillance video.

The robbery happened outside the Space Coast Credit Union at 7751 W. Oakland Park Blvd. just before 10 a.m., Sunrise Police spokesman Michelle Eddy said.

Surveillance video from the bank shows two robbers stop the guard as he entered the bank pushing bags of money on a cart.

The robbers force the guard to the ground and run off with the money, but the guard, still on the ground, pulls out a handgun and opens fire.

According to FBI spokesman Michael Leverock, the robbers fled in a stolen white Honda and drove the car a few blocks away before ditching it and fleeing in a silver Lexus.

The Honda was found with several bullet holes.

It's unknown whether either of the robbers was wounded, but one of them may have been shot in the back. The guard wasn't injured, Leverock said.

"It was a traumatic experience to go through, but he is just fine," Leverock said.

The FBI is handling the investigation, Eddy said.

Robbers eager for armored-truck riches in South Florida have attacked couriers several times in recent years.

In 2010, Brink's guard Alejandro Nodarse Arencibia was killed outside a Miramar bank during a robbery carried out by armed men.

Last year, the man who killed the guard, Nathaniel Moss, was sentenced to life in federal prison. Moss' cooperation with authorities helped lead to the arrests of several other people accused of taking part in the robbery.

A separate robbery ring was responsible for the shooting death of Brink's courier Alvaro Lopez Ramos, 26, at Calder Casino and Race Course in Miami Gardens in August 2011. Five people were convicted for Ramos’ shooting death last year, officials said.

Those killings followed a brazen holiday-time robbery in 2008, when Dunbar Armored guard Carlos Alvarado was shot to death inside Dadeland Mall. Several people also were sentenced to prison for their roles in that robbery.
