Broward Commissioners Ask TSA to Review Body Scanner Safety

The commissioners are concerned about the x-ray technology.

Broward County commissioners voted Tuesday to ask the Transportation Security Administration to research the safety of body scanners at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that 5 of the 9 commissioners voted for TSA to prove that the "backscatter" technology used at the airport is safe.

The machines use x-ray technology that are prohibited by the European Union, the Sentinel said.

The commissioners are asking the TSA to look at why the EU banned its airport scanners and to consider banning the scanners at the airport if it agrees with the findings.

They are also asking the TSA to determine if frequent fliers face a higher cancer risk from passing through the scanners and to post fliers about the dangers if they find the scanners to be unsafe.
