Broward Commissioners Pass Resolution in Support of Same-Sex Marriage

A week after a Broward County judge ruled that Florida's ban on same-sex marriages was unconstitutional, county commissioners passed a resolution in support of gay marriage.

The resolution was unanimously passed during a meeting Tuesday. Commissioners also asked the county attorney to look into withholding funding to Tallahassee that would be used to fight same-sex marriage.

Last week, Broward Circuit Court Judge Dale Cohen became the third Florida judge in a month to find the state ban unconstitutional, following Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel and Monroe County Circuit Judge Luis Garcia. Palm Beach County Judge Diana Lewis also overturned the same-sex marriage ban last week.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has filed a notice of appeal in the Monroe and Miami-Dade cases. No marriage licenses will be issued for gay couples in any of the four counties, pending appeals.

Bondi has said Florida judge should stop ruling on same-sex marriage cases until the U.S. Supreme Court decides whether states can ban gay marriage.
