Broward County Chiefs of Police Association Seeks to Protect Domestic Violence Victims

The Broward County Chiefs of Police Association is working on implementing processes and procedures that will better protect victims of domestic violence.

“It’s estimated that one in four women will experience domestic violence at some time in their life... and one in seven men,” Mary Riedel, a Board Director from Women in Distress said.

Calls for help in domestic violence cases can be some of the most dangerous for officers to respond to.

The changes proposed seek to make restraining orders easier to access if someone feels threatened. The process will now be streamlined with victims being able to obtain restraining orders within 45 minutes. Additionally, authorities will also separate victims from their alleged attackers for court dates, in an effort to ensure that they will not have to face a possible confrontation.

“Changes have already begun,” Mayor Michael Ryan of the City of Sunrise said. “The clerk’s office has begun hiring additional staff. They have re-purposed rooms for privacy.”

Officials say they hope these changes will better improve the protection of victims of domestic violence.
