Nearly a week and a half after Hurricane Irma dumped plenty of rain and left flooding across South Florida during the already wet summer months, Broward County took to the skies in an effort to keep away a major pest that comes with all that water: mosquitoes.
Officials from the Mosquito Control Section began aerial spraying for parts of Southwest Ranches and Pembroke Pines on Wednesday morning, with spraying planned for areas of Weston on Thursday weather permitting.
The spraying came after requests from residents and the cities over nuisance mosquitoes that come with heavy rains in the summer. Officials say the spraying was not related to any concerns over the Zika virus.
Planes began spraying at 4 a.m. Wednesday and flew for just over two hours, a schedule that is expected to take place on Thursday as well. Residents with breathing issues are advised to remain indoors during the spraying.
