Broward County Schools Will Excuse Student Absences For Monday's Solar Eclipse

Broward County Public Schools will excuse student absences for Monday’s solar eclipse, according to the county’s website.

However, schools in the district will open and dismiss at their regular scheduled times. Monday is the first day of classes for Broward Schools students.

“While students are encouraged to attend school each day, the District understands some parents may prefer to share the solar eclipse experience with their child at home,” the website says.

Students’ absences can be excused “with proper school notification in accordance with the District’s attendance policy,” the website says.

Earlier this week, the district announced that any outdoor activities scheduled for Monday between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. will be moved inside. It also warned parents that “distracted drivers and pedestrians are a likelihood during the time of the eclipse.”

Miami-Dade County Public Schools said in a news release Monday that there is no change in dismissal times because of the eclipse.

American Heritage decided to close both its Boca and Plantation campuses Monday.
