Broward Fire Rescue Promoting Safety When Frying Turkeys With Annual Demonstration

The National Fire Protection Agency is encouraging those frying turkey at home this Thanksgiving to not use oil containing propane turkey fryers and instead use oil-less outdoor units while also making sure your turkey has already defrosted and you’re not cooking a frozen one.

“Deep fried turkey is a delicacy people love it in the south and these hot oil fryers are very popular but they're not without dangers,” said Broward Fire Rescue PIO Mike Jachles. “So the message from the Broward Sheriff Office is if you want to enjoy deep fried turkey, it’s best you leave it to the professionals. Go to a restaurant or a grocer that has this professional grade equipment.”

Broward Fire Rescue spent Friday showing the danger of cooking by this method, holding a demonstration annually in order to prevent cooking fires from happening.

“It’s important to keep common sense and safety when making dinner and not to have children near,” Jachles said. “Don't leave a pot on the stove or a toaster oven on – you need to have adult supervision all the time.”

The thanksgiving holiday is the top day for cooking fires to happen – which is why BSO wants you to be safe and think twice when using an oil turkey fryer.
