A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy is behind bars after being accused of helping drug traffickers move large amounts of cocaine and heroin through South Florida.
Investigators arrested 47-year-old Albury Burrows while he was on duty at the Port Everglades district, where officials say he gave a drug organization advice, on how to avoid detection and prosecution.
The 18-year-veteran of the agency is now suspended without pay and is facing a total of 10 charges, including racketeering. Bail has been set at $261,000.
“Everyone who wears our uniform swore to serve and protect the residents of Broward County, not abuse their power for a self-serving purpose,” Sheriff Scott Israel said in a statement. “I promised to instill a culture of efficiency and transparency."
"Although disappointing, this arrest is yet another example of how the professionals in our agency will follow leads wherever they take them, even if that means arresting a fellow deputy who has done wrong," Israel added.
In 2011, a jury found Burrows not guilty of grand theft after prosecutors said he stole thousands of dollars in cash that was seized in a drug bust.
