Broward Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Rivera Dies From Injuries Following Crash

Deputy Daniel Rivera, 32, died Saturday at 10:20 p.m., the BSO said.

A Broward Sheriff's deputy has died from injuries sustained in a Sept. 11 crash, officials said.

Deputy Daniel Rivera, 32, was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m. Saturday at Broawrd Health North, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

It's still unknown what caused the single-car crash which happened around 6:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 just north of Atlantic Boulevard near Copans Road. Officials said he was on his way to work and getting off at an exit when the crash happened.

Aerial footage showed the deputy's car wrapped around a palm tree just off the highway.

Rivera was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and underwent a five-hour brain surgery following the crash.

The BSO said Rivera spent 10 years with the agency, first as a Department of Detention deputy before he was transferred to the Department of Law Enforcement in May 2012. He was assigned to the Pompano Beach district office as a road patrol deputy, BSO said.

Funeral arrangements are still pending.
