Broward Sheriff's Deputy Saves Toddler, Grandmother From Lake

An off-duty Broward Sheriff's deputy jumped into a lake outside his home near Fort Lauderdale to rescue a toddler and her 72-year-old grandmother.

Jacqueline Agard was babysitting her 2-year-old granddaughter, Miley, and the two were sitting outside in the backyard of their home. The family dog and cat ran out of the house and that's when Little Miley tried to catch them, but the water caught her attention.

"To my horror of all horrors, she jumped into the lake," said Agard. " I just ran and jumped into that water and I had no fear whatsoever."

The 72-year-old doesn't remember how she made it to the water without her walker, but she does remember how desperate she was to save her granddaughter. When Agard reached Miley in the water, the both of them were struggling to stay afloat.

Luckily, Vincent Graham, A Broward Sheriff's detention deputy, was home and he and his wife heard the screams for help. He dashed out and saw the child's head emerge from the water.

Graham says he grabbed the child with one hand and handed her to his wife. He used the other hand to feel underwater for Jacqueline Agard. "I grabbed her with one hand and grabbed grandma to hold her above the water," said Graham.

The detention deputy says he's not a hero, but that he was just at the right place at the ight time. "God used me, and whatever he needs us to do, we do it."

Agard is grateful and calls Graham their guardian angel. "His heart is so kind that he would jump into that water."

The pair was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
