Broward Teachers Lose Licenses Over Sexting, Drug Allegations

Allegations of drugs, sexting with a student and theft have two Broward teachers banned for life from the classroom and a third suspended from teaching for six months.

Jason Dixon, a TV production teacher at Monarch High in Coconut Creek, and Judith Offret, a Hallandale Elementary kindergarten teacher, both lost their teaching licenses from the Florida Education Practices Commission, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Dixon, 43, sent sexually explicit text messages to a 17-year-old student in October 2012, the report said. He resigned in November 2012 and wasn't criminally charged.

Offret, 62, underwent a drug test after she appeared impaired in December 2013. The test indicated she had been using cocaine, the report said. Offret opted to retire.

A third teacher, 45-year-old Torrance Smith, was fired from his job as a second grade teacher at Larkdale Elementary in Lauderhill in August 2012. Smith had been suspended for allegedly punching two girls in the arm, spanking other students and slapping two female students on the butt, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

While under investigation, Smith was caught having someone else clock in for him at least seven times, and he was fired for theft, the report said. He'll be eligible to teach again in six months.
