Parade Perils

Macy's invited a Broward teen to march in their Thanksgiving Day parade band. Trouble is, saxophonist Danny Evans has to foot the bill.

Garfield will be there. So will the Rockettes. And, hopefully, so will South Florida high school senior Danny Evans.

The marching band director at Coral Springs Charter School was selected to play the tenor saxophone for Macy's Great American Marching Band, which showcases top talent from each state, at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Of the 230 members, Danny is 1 of 14 from Florida.

He describes his sax as "the love of his life." This summer he was at band camp at FSU when he got the good news. Danny says he has never been to New York City and is excited about being in the parade.

However, that honor comes at a price set by Macy's: airfare plus $1339, which includes hotels and meals for 6 nights.

"Macy's would not be able to cover travel costs for the thousands of people who join the line-up every year," a spokesperson for the parade said.

Coral Spring Charter Band Boosters are fundraising to cover the cost of Danny's trip.

Donations can be sent to them at 3205 N University Dr. Coral Springs, FL 33065 attention Danny Evans/Macy's.
