Career South Florida Con Man Arrested for Impersonating Cop, Again

Man with history of fraud convictions posed as cop to for fraud: Police

A career con man with a history of impersonating police officers is behind bars yet again after he was arrested Wednesday in Palm Beach County on that same charge, police said.

Bobby Staley, 34, is facing four counts of impersonating a law enforcement officer and being being held on $18,000 bond, jail records showed.

Staley, of Cooper City, was arrested after authorities say he posed as a cop to get personal information, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Police said Staley called the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office on Nov. 24, 2010, posing as "Detective Perez" and asking for the social security number and address for a man named Thomas Grandstaff.

Two days later, Staley was arrested by Aventura Police for attempting to buy $2,000 in gift cards at a Sears using Grandstaff's Sears credit card.

The real Perez told police he was on vacation and had never called for Grandstaff's information.

Authorities said a detective with the Broward County Sheriff's Office was also investigating similar calls between Nov. 17 and Nov. 22, 2010.

Staley was arrested last week by BSO for allegedly defrauding Broward and Miami-Dade home improvement stores out of merchandise worth over $97,000, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Authorities said Staley was able to dupe The Home Depot's credit card company into adding him as an authorized purchaser for companies with accounts. The purchases had been made in September, October and November 2010.

He was charged with 12 counts of unlawful use of credit cards and one count of organized scheme to defraud.

In fact, Staley had been arrested at least 40 times throughout South Florida on theft and fraud charges with 34 convictions, and was arrested in 2009 for impersonation of a law enforcement officer, according to police.
