Carlos Curbelo Has Slight Edge Over Debbie Mucarsel-Powell in District 26: New Poll

According to the Mason-Dixon survey conducted for Telemundo 51, Curbelo has a 46 to 45 percent edge over Mucarsel-Powell

Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo is facing a formidable challenge in his effort to be re-elected in South Florida's District 26, with Democratic rival Debbie Mucarsel-Powell slightly behind, according to a new survey released on Monday.

According to the Mason-Dixon survey conducted for Telemundo 51, Curbelo has a 46 to 45 percent edge over Mucarsel-Powell, with 9 percent of voters undecided.

The study was conducted from October 3 to 9 among 625 registered voters in District 26 and has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.

The Cuban-American representative was considered one of the vulnerable Republican congressmen in the Nov. 6 election because he represents a district with a more liberal composition than other areas of South Florida. The district supported Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in the last two presidential elections.

Although Curbelo is better known than the Democratic activist who is originally from Ecuador, the survey shows that he is at a disadvantage among all ethnic groups except Cuban-Americans.

Mucarsel-Powell is favored by white voters (51-34 percent), African-Americans (83-10 percent) and non-Cuban Hispanics (62-25 percent).

Curbelo, on the other hand, has broad support from the influential Cuban-American vote (74-22 percent), as well as a majority among men and people over 50 years of age.

District 26, which includes southwest Miami-Dade County and all of Monroe County, was created in 2012 and had Democrat Joe Garcia as its first representative. Curbelo is seeking reelection for the second time after defeating Garcia in 2014 and 2016.
