Ceremony, Award for Two Miami-Dade Officers Killed in Line of Duty

Two Miami-Dade Police officers killed in the line of duty four years ago were remembered at a ceremony Tuesday as a new award was named in their honor.

The ceremony for Officers Roger Castillo and Amanda Haworth was held at police headquarters in Doral and was attended by their families.

"They said they would never forget and they meant it, and she’s still with us and still here with us," said son Austin Haworth, 17.

Castillo and Haworth were shot and killed by a wanted murderer while hunting him down in Liberty City in January 2011. Miami-Dade Police Detective Oscar Plasencia shot and killed the suspect.

"He planned an ambush for us. He decided he wasn’t going back to prison, it was just that simple," he said.

On Tuesday, Plasencia was the recipient of the first Roger Castillo–Amanda Haworth Award. Each year the award will be given out to the brave men and woman who serve warrants and continue the hunt for criminals across Miami-Dade County.

"The result of this award is it keeps the memory of Roger and Amanda alive," Plasencia said.

Austin Haworth, Amanda’s 17-year-old son, said the award and remembrance of his mother means so much.

"They said they would never forget and they meant it, and she’s still with us and still here with us," he said.

Austin also wanted to use the time to drop his mom a quick message.

"I love you and I miss you very much," he said.
