Charges Dropped Against Brother of Man Shot by Police
Girlfriend refused to cooperate in battery investigation
The brother of Husein Shehada won't face battery charges.
The domestic battery charges filed against a man whose brother was shot and killed by Miami Beach police in June have been dropped, according to the State Attorney's Office.
Samer Shehada was visiting from Virginia with his brother, Husein, and the pair's girlfriends, when they got into a confrontation with police outside a Washington Avenue club in the early hours of June 14.
The 29-year-old Husein was shot in the confrontation by Officer Adam Tavss, and Samer was arrested at the scene.
Police said they were responding to reports of a man waving a gun around, and that Husein, who was unarmed, was shot by Tavss when he reached for something in his pocket.
Samer, 31, was arrested after officers said he punched and threatened his girlfriend, identified as Karlia Karpel.
But today, the State Attorney's Office said they have dropped those charges after Kerpel refused to cooperate with the investigation.
